With economic doom on the horizon, middle-aged and widowed, Cheryl Harrington, sells her worldly possessions, buys a specially outfitted and modified RV and moves to the Anza-Borrego Desert located east of San Diego, California.

Surrounded by picturesque desert, and a pristine oasis within easy proximity, Cheryl sets up an existence unaware of the escalating turmoil, the remainder of the world was suffering.

In Atlanta, Dr. Sarah Jones, renowned epidemiologist with the Center for Disease Control, has been delivered the first sample of a virus which has decimated inland China.

Within a few short weeks, this unstoppable virus will circle the globe, killing billions. With the skills of Dr. Jones and the entire C.D.C., they cannot stop apocalypse.

Jed Rose, ex-Navy Seal and father of Natalie, uses his formidable military skill to keep himself and his daughter alive. Fleeing the city for the desert, they join a group of survivors, but when the group's leader tells Jed, he'll have to join in of stealing and killing, in order to stay with the group, Jed takes Natalie and flees deeper into the desert, where each day is a struggle against life and death.

Lydia and Allen Maxwell lived an affluent life in San Francisco, until the SuperFlu descended on the city, wiping out nearly everyone in just four days. Allen Maxwell was among the dead, leaving Lydia alone.

Lydia gathers all her courage and heads for the only place she might find shelter. She drives south to San Diego to find her mother, Cheryl Harrington.

Pena Spring The Journey Trilogy Book 1 eBook J P Dumont Nicole Lohrbeer

I really enjoyed this book, except for two small things:

- The first is Cheryl's RV...I totally get wanting to modify what is basically, a 'retirement' home, but for a 'retirement' home, some of the modifications were more appropriate to a battle wagon.

- The second is Jed. This man is supposed to be a Navy Seal with "formidable military skills", yet when Cheryl finds them, he and his daughter are hungry, thirsty and dirty.

But these are small things and not really all that unexpected and therefore, do not take away from a good book...and this is a good book.

Pena Spring The Journey Trilogy Book 1 eBook J P Dumont Nicole Lohrbeer Reviews

I was much impressed with this book. I recommend it to all who like the apocalyptic style genre. I hope the next book will be out soon. They said July 1, but a hmmm...its not happened yet.
Interesting premise and a great read on travel.
I enjoyed the apocalypse-type story that focused more heavily on people working together for survival rather than having too much violence. Yes, there are some "bad" guys, but good always trumps evil. Overall, it was a pleasantly enjoyable read that I didn't want to put down. Quickly got the sequel and enjoyed it as well.
There are a lot of commas placed seemingly at random in this book. It's very distracting, but I'm trying to ignore them. Some of the wording is strange and offbeat, but some of the mistakes are laughably bad. For example, 'toting' is used a couple of times in the first chapter when the word 'touting' is what should have been used, and 'threw' for 'through'.
I downloaded this onto my ipad, so perhaps the formatting was an issue?
This is the story of Cheryl, who decides to sell her house, quit her job, buy an RV, and leave the pressures and stress of the world behind.
She takes her two cats and heads to Pena Springs. Meanwhile, back in the world, a new strain of the flu has hit, wiping out most of the population.
What I like the idea of freedom, the strength that self-reliance brings, and global apocalypse.
What I didn't like besides the spelling and grammar issues even after the crap hits the fan, Cheryl is never in a bad mood. I think you would have to be upset about a global apocalypse, at least once or twice. Also, all the non-evil survivors are so happy and polite. I find that hard to believe.

Results if, (and that's a big if) you can get past the spelling and grammar atrocities it's pretty good.
This is one of those kind of books you end up awake all night because you just have to keep going to see what happens next. The author has you feeling like the characters are your friends without you feeling it happening. Can't wait to see what the other 2 books in the trilogy bring.
The author creates an interesting plot with just the right amount of character development. In the plot Cheryl Harrington, sells her worldly possessions, buys a specially outfitted and modified RV and moves to the Anza-Borrego Desert. She is tired of the urban rat race. Of course, months after she is settled in her desert canyon the world is hit by the super flu and civilization dies.

She tunes out the world and on a spur of the moment shopping trip to town Cheryl learns how dangerous urban life has become. The tale is complete but set up for another book. However, since it is a 2011 copyright and book 2 is not on we might be waiting a long time for the trilogy to be completed.
What makes the main character of PENA SPRING by J.P. Dumont unique is that she is a an intelligent, middle-aged widow who thrives on the challenges of living by herself in the Californian desert near the oasis of Pena Spring. Certainly, there are countless women who possess the qualities of Cheryl Harrington, but seldom is one the main character of a survival fiction book. As the book progresses, Cheryl and her ever increasing "family" must cope with the the effects of a superflu and the subsequent collapse of society. PENA SPRING is is both a satisfying page-turner and a promising start of The Journey Trilogy.
